A disappointing crowd witnessed a reasonable match in the heat on Saturday, with Staines eventually winning by 3 goals to 1 to claim the Lord of Ashford in Middlesex Challenge Bowl.
Ashford gave new signing Jamal Fenelon his debut following his transfer from Godalming Town and the big striker did well enough in his first match for the Club, whilst Warren Harris, despite previously committing himself to Ashford, started for the visitors.
Staines showed their class to take a three goal lead, with the second and third being scored either side of half-time but there were signs of encouragement for Ashford, who pulled one back later in the second half, thanks to a cool finish by sub Mark Bitmead. A fine save minutes later from Staines keeper Courtnage then prevented Ashford from pulling another one back.
Ashford will not be too discouraged though, playing against a Conference South side who harbour hopes of another excellent season, especially as the new squad is still getting to know each other, with new players still being introduced.
Full report to come from Terry Ryan.
