A challenge 20/20 cricket match took place on Monday (9th August) with an Ashford Town (Middx) FC XI, under the captaincy of Mick Tilt, taking on a very youthful XI from Ashford Cricket Club in the first of, what is hopefully, many inter-club social events.
ATFC batted first and scored a very impressive 118/9 off their 20 overs. Dan Butler (Fatboy) was the pick of the batsmen with a stunning 41, whilst three others made it into double figures, Phil Stubbs (10), Lee Bessent (19) and Chairman Alan Cox (10). Slightly more embarrassing was a two ball duck for Alan Hill which was made even worse when his son Nathan managed 1 not out, helped by some very “friendly” fielding by the ACC wicket keeper. Pick of the Cricket Club bowling were Graham and Ian Doggett 3/19 and 2/14 respectively.
When the ACC opening batsmen took the field there was an air of confidence in their camp, but as their innings progressed some inspired fielding by ATFC, in particular James Stubbs, kept the score down and the game finely balanced. However the quality of the ACC batsmen, and woman, showed through and they finally made it to 120/4 with two balls to spare. There was a wicket each for Phil Stubbs, Adam Bessent (a stunning caught and bowled), Norman Shiels and Dan Butler (named as Man of the Match for ATFC). It was then time to retire to the bar and BBQ for a well earned pint and some hot food.
Many thanks to Ashford Cricket Club for being excellent, and very sporting, hosts. Thanks also to all those gave up their Monday evening to play or come along and supported the event.
