Chertsey Town U18s 1-2 Ashford Town U18s A Mitchell Fountain strike gave Ashford the victory in a game that was worthwhile to Ben Murray's plans for the season ahead. Playing on a bumpy surface at Addlestone Leisure Centre, Murray started with eight first year players in the starting line-up and quickly they began to dominate proceedings, aiming to keep the passes short and play football. The first goal came after just ten minutes, from the hard-working Conor Moody, with a strike from within the area. This settled the whole game down and just as Ashford were penetrating passes and moves through the heart of Chertsey's defence, there was an injury to Ashford player George Franks. The game was halted while an ambulance was called, as there was a suspected fracture to the players ankle. Thankfully, it was reported late last night, that he had not broken a bone and wish him a speedy recovery. This break in play, allowed Chertsey to regain some composure and the rest of the half was an even affair, with Ashford being reminded to speed the play up. The second half saw many substitutes as Murray wanted to look at some triallists before making decisions on signings for the season, this didn't mean that the expectations were any different and when the Chertsey Town winger hit a great strike into the top corner, after a defensive mistake, the players were once again reminded to speed up the level of play. This then led to the game's winner, with some 7 passes being made in the lead up to the goal, all at a quick tempo. The phase, that had begun with Georgie Rooke in central defence, went through the midfield and out to the wing, where Fountain found himself driving into the edge of the box before perfectly executing a strike across the goalkeeper and into the side of the goal for a great first victory. Manager Ben Murray added, "This was a good experience for the lads, they have been playing in reserve fixtures against more experienced and higher caliber players, so this game in their own age group showed how they need to dictate the speed and tempo of the game, for the opportunities to come. We had a very young side out tonight, with still five or six second years to come back into the squad, but these lads here tonight provide me with a great headache, I have no issue with selecting a team of first years (16/17 year olds) for the first game of the season, if they are good enough, so the competition in the squad at the moment is healthy."
