Ashford played their first ever match in the Capital League on Wednesday evening, losing to the only goal of the game scored by Wealdstone’s Jon Douglas in the 33rd minute when lack of proper marking from a free kick wide on the right proved Ashford’s undoing.
Overall though it was a useful exercise, with Paul Burgess showing he has lost none of his vitality in goal. He shared the duties with Jordan Dawson, who, fresh from his 1st Team outing on Saturday, looked comfortable and assured between the posts. Ashford generally fielded a very young team, including Thomas Kanek, playing wide left, who played for Staines Academy last season, and second half subs, Max Webb from Woking’s youth team last season and Mitchell Fountain, recently released by Brentford. All three showed their potential.
The back four saw Kayode Oladipo and Bairoh Conteh playing together for the first time and they largely annulled the threat from quite a strong Wealdstone line up. In midfield Tom Betts showed up well and would certainly receive the “Ashford Man of the Match” award from this writer. Far too many passes overall though went astray and although a draw would probably have been a fair result, Ashford’s threat up front was rather limited. Spencer Taffurelli missed a glorious opportunity to level things up near the end whilst a couple of well struck efforts from Betts were well saved but that was about it.
