Ashford remain in the FA Cup, thanks to an 85th minute equaliser from sub Lewis Wombwell, who scrambled the ball home from close range.
Earlier, following a goalless first half, with neither side creating a great deal, Worthing had taken the lead from a controversial penalty, awarded when an attacker fell conveniently following a challenge from Ashford skipper Billy Jeffreys. Ashford were incensed that one or two later decisions went against them, whilst a great volley from Mark Bitmead almost gave them the winner right at the death, but Ashford keeper Paul Burgess was voted “Ashford Man of the Match” though, after some great saves, that kept out an enthusiastic Worthing side and that tells its own story.
Overall a draw was probably the fairest result and the teams will resume battle on Tuesday evening at Worthing, kick-off 7.45 p.m. Ashford will be running a coach, leaving Short Lane at 4.00 p.m. when supporters will be welcome. Full report to come from Terry Ryan
