The Suburban League AGM took place at Sutton United on Wednesday evening. There were a number of late changes to the proposed constitution, with Haywards Heath Town, who had initially resigned from the League, seeking re-election while the twelve new clubs already seeking membership were supplemented by a late application from Hampton & Richmond Borough. On a show of hands, the assembled clubs voted to have nineteen clubs in both the North and South Divisions, with Hampton & Richmond going into the North Division, while Haywards Heath returned to the South Division.
All twelve applicant clubs were also welcomed into the competition. There were no changes to the proposed line-up of the Premier Division, which is as it is listed in the Club Directory, and includes six promoted sides to replace the bottom four, plus Carshalton Athletic and Hayes & Yeading, whom have both resigned. The directory will probably have to undergo some alterations, though, as Croydon Athletic have been placed in the South Division, which presumably means that AFC Wimbledon must find an alternative home venue for their own fixtures in the Premier Division.
The League's Management Committee were re-elected en-bloc, while a Meritorious Service Award was presented to respected referee Bruce McClaren, who has hung up his whistle after an 18-year association with the League. Surprisingly, the draws for the League Cup and Champions Cup were not made at the meeting, and will instead be made at the first Management Committee meeting of the new campaign. The season shall commence on August 16th, and the intention is for the campaign to conclude on April 25th 2009, although clubs agreed to set the season's final date for matches as May 31st 2009, in case of bad weather. |
