The Southern Youth League held their Annual General Meeting at Sutton United, twenty-four hours after the Suburban League had convened at the same venue. Unlike the previous evening's meeting, this gathering was less than harmonious, with the proposed constitution proving to be the main bone of contention.
Some seven member clubs had resigned from the League, as had three non-playing member clubs who had not entered teams in 2007-08, while Woking were reducing their membership from two teams to one. With four new clubs applying to come in - Crawley Down, Greenwich Borough, Redhill and St Andrews, who were elected en-bloc - the League Management Committee had proposed reducing the four regionalised divisions to three, with two having ten clubs and one eleven. This was objected to by Merstham FC, who felt that three divisions of eight teams and one of seven would be more practical, particularly if the bad weather that afflicted the previous season were repeated. This proposal failed to find support, so debate turned instead to the three division proposal. While there were no problems with the West Division in whch Ashford had been placed, Merstham FC, in concert with Horley Town, objected to the League's proposal, on the grounds that Cobham and St Andrews were allocated to the South Division, while Merstham and South Park were in the Central Division. A proposal was tabled that the four clubs simply swap over, but this was objected to by Cobham FC, who indicated a strong preference to remain in the South.
Eventually, St Andrews agreed to swap divisions, while Mole Valley Predators, who were not present, were also switched from the South Division to the Central, allowing Merstham and South Park to return to the South Division. Ashford will therefore compete in the West Division is 2008-09 There was a small sting in the tail for Ashford, as the meeting was informed during Any Other Business that Hayes & Yeading United wished to complete their home fixtures by Christmas, to facilitate the redevelopment of The Warren, the former Yeading FC ground. The management committee were elected en-bloc,and the meeting proper ended with the League Cup Draw. With 31 entrants, one team was to receive a bye to round two - the lucky side being Sandhurst Town. Ashford's League Cup odessey will start with a long trip to League new boys Crawley Down, on a date to be arranged. |
