On Thursday evening, Ashford’s Capital League team won by four goals to two at Burnham in a surprisingly entertaining match. As has been the norm in the Capital League, there were plenty of new players in the Ashford ranks, along with a number of current Under-18 players continuing to develop their senior experience. Referee Conway added to the enjoyment of the evening with his own special style of refereeing, which did at least include talking to players who might normally have expected a caution, and for the most part they responded. Spencer Taffurelli, on the 1st team bench for several weeks without too much of a sniff, was clearly in the mood and scored both Ashford’s opening goals. Over the course of the match he could have notched a double hatrick, if honesty is to prevail, but nevertheless, a “well done” is due to this popular player, whose efforts never flagged. By half-time, Burnham had scored two decent goals of their own but Ashford held the lead, courtesy of the “goal of the night” rammed home by Under-18 Jack Mayger, possibly less in the limelight than some of his Under-18 colleagues over the season, but someone who could develop into an excellent senior player in the future, hopefully with Ashford. The scoring eased off in the second half, as did the quality of play from both teams but it is fair to say that Ashford were generally in control on this occasion and this was emphasised by a fourth goal close to the end by debutant Alex Garcev, who impressed sufficiently to sign 1st Team forms immediately after the match.
