Interview: Reserve Boss Stephens Speaks! PDF Print E-mail

In the latest of our occasional series of interviews with key figures at the club, the Official Website caught up with Reserve Team Manager Glynn Stephens after Tuesday night's training session.  In an illuminating chat, Glynn has set an ambitious target for the Suburban League side and spoken of the difficult decisions the club's coaches have to make even early in pre-season.

The full interview is below.

Q:  You've had two good weeks of pre-season training.  Are you happy with how things are going?

A:  I'm very pleased.  There are a lot of players to get through at the moment. but it's been good so far.  We've had an early sort out this year, which is a bit different to what we've done in the past and we now believe we're working with the right numbers and the right people, so it's all been good.

Q:  In terms of numbers, how many are you working with now, across the two senior squads?

A:  Well, we've still got a few players away, mainly senior players from Mark's squad.  We've got one or two Youth Team boys that are still working more with the Youth Team than us, so I would say that if you built them back into the equation, we're looking at about 36-38 players across the two squads.

Q:  I know you've had a few triallists this summer.  How have they shaped up?

A:  Well, that's the sorting process we've already spoken about.  We've got rid of a lot that we didn't think would get anywhere near the teams and we've kept about six or seven which we will look at over the forthcoming friendlies.  Some of them will be possibly be involved at Selsey, if not the game at Staines Lammas on Thursday and we will make decisions then about whether they will be retained or allowed to go.

Q:  I know it's very, very early, but based on what you've seen so far, any targets or predictions?

A:  I think we're going to be fitter this year, I think the pre-season has moved up a notch from what I can remember in past years.  I think we're going to be a very fit side, I think we're going to be a very young side and I just think that the overall quality of players we've got is at the best that I've ever seen it.  I would say that we should definitely be in the top six this year.  We should definitely finish in the top six and we should aspire to go on and win at least one cup this year as well.
