Mark Butler and his squad will be hoping for another good turn-out for Tuesday's final warm-up match against Oxford City. The game at Short Lane is the centrepiece of a frantic week of preparations, which sees a total of five games in just four days and all three of the club's senior teams in action.
The busiest side are the Under 18s, who play tonight, Wednesday and Thursday as Mick Snowden has a squad of over thirty players that need match practice with the season just two weeks away. This week is also a busy one off the park, with the Ryman League pre-season meeting held yesterday, the Suburban League meeting on Wednesday and a committee meeting on Thursday.
The first match is an Under 18 fixture at Bracknell Town. The Robins had an excellent season at Youth level last term, and were runners-up in their division of the Allied Counties League, as well as reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Youth Cup. This squad has formed the basis of the Robins new Suburban League squad, who visited Short Lane on Saturday and played a full part in a close game, which was won 3-2 by Ashford.
Tonight, the Berkshire side return the favour and welcome us to Larges Lane for a 7.30pm kick-off under floodlights. Directions to the ground are available via the Bracknell website, just click here. Tuesday night sees two squads in action. At Short Lane, Mark Butler leads his troops into action against Oxford City. City were promoted via the play-offs out of the Southern League South & West Division and this season will compete in the Premier Division of that league. Historically, though, they were synonymous with the Isthmian League, having held membership from 1907 to 1989, which they had to resign having lost their White Horse Ground. The club regrouped and re-emerged, building a new ground at Court Place Farm and going to Wembley for the 1995 FA Vase final, although they were defeated by Arlesey Town. Last season, City finished fourth in their division, before defeating Didcot Town and Uxbridge to earn the step up.
Mark Butler's squad will be brimming with confidence, having scored fifteen goals in their last three outings but will be prepared for a tough battle against a well-drilled side who have played a number of games against higher-level opposition. Kick off is at 7.45pm and entry is £5 for Adults, £3 for Concessions and Under 16s are admitted free. While Mark Butler takes the helm at Short Lane, an Ashford XI head for Woking to take on the First Team of Westfield FC. The Surrey side will be strong opposition, having pushed the Reserves all the way in last season's Surrey Premier Cup Quarter Final, which Ashford eventually won 2-1.
If Saturday's match is any guide, the line-up will again have an unfamiliar look, with a number of new signings and triallists likely to feature, although almost certainly in smaller numbers than the weekend. Kick off at Elmbridge Lane is 7.30pm, and directions are available here. The remaining games involve the Under-18 team, who will be looking for match fitness ahead of the new campaign. With over thirty players to assess, manager Mick Snowden has chosen to play matches on consecutive evenings. On Wednesday, we welcome Cobham to the Training Pitch at Short Lane for a 6.30pm kick-off.
On Thursday, it can be predicted that a different side will take on Beaconsfield SYCOB in a recently arranged friendly. We have no details as to the venue of this match, but do know that this game will kick-off at 6.45pm. The SYCOB website is here. |
