Two goals from Scott Harris sealed an opening day win for Ashford Town at Hastings United. The Tangerines were two up and coasting before the Arrows pulled a late goal back. Terry Ryan's match report is here.
After the match, the modest striker described the win at The Pilot Field as "brilliant" and insisted that there was still room for improvement from the Tangerines: "There's lots of room for improvement from us. We conceded a last minute goal, which was disappointing. We can hopefully score more goals as well"
The result puts Ashford sixth in the embryonic League table, with Dover Athletic leading the way after smashing four past Harrow Borough. The full results are as follows: | Canvey Island | 2 | 4 | Horsham | | Carshalton Athletic | 2 | 1 | Margate | | Dover Athletic | 4 | 0 | Harrow Borough | | Harlow Town | 1 | 1 | Sutton United | | Hastings United | 1 | 2 | Ashford Town (Mx) | | Hendon | 3 | 0 | Dartford | | Heybridge Swifts | 0 | 2 | Maidstone United | | Ramsgate | 1 | 2 | AFC Hornchurch | | Staines Town | 1 | 0 | Billericay Town | | Tooting & Mitcham United | 1 | 2 | Boreham Wood | | Wealdstone | 0 | 0 | Tonbridge Angels |
Back at Short Lane, the Reserves took a first half lead through a predatory George Baldock finish. However, Glynn Stephens' side missed a hatful of chances and were made to pay for it by a well organised Burgess Hill Town side. A defensive mix-up allowed the Hillians to equalise after 56 minutes, while a bizarre ricochet from a Wes Goggin challenge allowed a forward who would normally have been offside to race beyond a static defence. However, Glynn Stephens did say that he had felt a number of players had put in good performances on the day and that if his side had been more clinical in front of goal they would have won the match.
