Ashford Town's Suburban League squad split the points at a soggy Imperial Fields in a remarkable 4-4 draw with Tooting & Mitcham United. The Terrors had the lead as early as the fifth minute, while some abject defending then gifted the home side a simple second goal. A 25 yard strike from Gavin Smith brought Town back into the game, only for the Londoners to add a third with a well-worked goal to make the score 1-3 with only nineteen minutes played!
With both sides streaming forwards, it was a surprise that it took another nineteen minutes before the next goal was scored, and it went to Ashford after a good move allowed Scott Todd to send in a cross which left Smith with a simple finish. However, moments later, Tooting's forwards swept through the Tangerines back four like a hot knife through butter to give their side a 4-2 lead at the break. There was no way the second half could have proceeded with the breakneck speed of the first and a far more solid-looking Ashford established control of the game. This was manifested in Scott Todd's 64th minute goal, which saw the talismanic playmaker drive home a loose ball created by good work from Jon Palmer. However, shortly afterwards, Ashford left back Matt Holley was stretched off with an ankle injury and had to be taken to hospital. Ashford looked the likelier to score despite this setback, but had to wait until the sixth minute of injury time to rescue a point. A free kick from Scott Todd caused chaos in the penalty area and Russell Canderton slammed the loose ball into the net. A full match report is online.
