Tonight's Southern Youth League match at home to Camberley Town was postponed by match referee Ian Hempel just moments before kick-off when the Surrey official deemed the Short Lane surface to be frozen. It would be fair to say that there were contrasting views on Mr Hempel's decision, given that the match was due to start and all of the refreshments had been prepared.
Given that the First Team managed to play at Leatherhead last night in similar conditions the two sides might be forgiven for feeling a little frustrated at the late call, but the referee's first concern must be for the safety of the players and this will undoubtedly have been foremost in his mind.
