The destiny of the Southern Youth League Championship is out of Ashford Town's hands after they slipped to a 1-4 home defeat at the hands of Central Division winners Sutton United. Playing for the first time in almost a month, Mick Snowden's side lacked fluency and slipped behind to a goal from Billy Dunn in the 29th minute. Seconds later, the Ash Trees felt they should have been awarded a penalty when a visiting defender controlled the ball with his hand, but the referee was unsighted and his assistant waved play on.
Just before half time, a through ball from George Baldock sent Jimmy Stanford clear and the lively forward flicked the ball over the goalkeeper to level the match. However, early in the second half. an opportunistic effort from Dunn put the Us back in front and when Sutton were awarded a penalty, Dunn completed his hat-trick. Salt was rubbed into Ashford's wounds when Bentley Graham made it 4-1. Ashford must now beat Three Bridges at Sutton United on Monday and hope that the Sussex side can defeat Sutton at the same venue on May 22nd to have any chance of retaining the Championship Shield.
