Football Development Officer Ben Murray declared the inaugural Ashford Town Junior Six-a-Side tournament "a great weekend for the football club". The event provided over 650 young footballers the chance to play over the two days and Ben told the Official Website "the feedback from those kids, their managers and also their parents have all been really positive". All the Ashford Town teams played a part in the weekend. The Ash Trees produced two winning age-groups, those being the Under 14s, who went through the tournament unbeaten and defeated Wimbledon Hawks in the final. Also, our newly formed Under 16s who are managed by Merv Hughes, beat Chertsey Town in the final. Elsewhere, Paul Bonner's Under 13s reached the final, beaten narrowly by Kingstonian Youth. Their were also two semi-final appearances for the Under 12s and Under 10s age groups.
Ben added: "I would like to personally thank a few people for making the event run so well over the two days. The main driving force of the tournament, which allowed it to run smoothly were Kelvin Poulter, Alan Hill, Mark Davis (Club Lout), Vikki Cox (Tory), Emma Rodgers (Bodge) and Liam Balmer. We definitely really enjoyed the banter and strangely the stresses that come with running a tournament!"
He went on: "Also, thanks are due to the guys that helped me run the football so well, Mark Sellars provided us with some high quality referees, who worked tirelessly over the duration of the two days, considering the hot weather we experienced. Thanks also to my pitch marshals who helped me run the tournament, going round collecting scores and making sure things ran smoothly, those being Tyler Tobin and Josh Hughes, who both then took part in the winning Under 14s team that played on the Sunday afternoon, after being at the tournament at 9.00am each morning, with Tyler making some important saves and Josh scoring with the last kick of the tournament to win it for 14s. There are others who helped out throughout the two days, but the list would be too long to mention, so I think its best to generally thank all managers and their parents from the teams who contributed over the duration." There is already a discussion about the dates for next years event!
