Ashford have reached agreement with AFC Wimbledon for the transfer of Ricky Wellard (pictured) who underwent a medical yesterday evening. The deal will see Ashford receive an immediate transfer fee plus a further sum if Ricky’s services are retained by Wimbledon for the following season. A “sell-on” percentage has also been agreed as part of the deal.
“Bones” played in 190 1st Team matches for Ashford, including 30 as sub, making his debut on 8 January 2005 in a 2-1 win over Stourport Swifts (as a late sub for Anthony Eggington) and culminating in the Surrey Senior Cup Final win over Woking at the end of last season when he scored something of a wonder goal, being one of his overall total of 25. It was inevitable that his class would see him moving up the football ladder at some stage and he leaves with the Club’s blessing and best wishes for the future.
He becomes only the third player ever for whom Ashford have received a transfer fee, the previous two being Dannie Bulman (to Wycombe Wanderers) and Richard Butler (also to AFC Wimbledon).
