A reasonably busy midweek looms, with both the 1st Team and the Under-18’s in action. The 1st Team travel this evening (Tuesday) to Fleet Town in the 2nd Round of the Isthmian League Cup, now known as the Championship Manager Cup.
Fleet, managed by Andy Sinton, are members of Division One South and have been unlucky in failing to secure promotion over the last two seasons, twice losing out in the play-offs. Ashford will not need telling that, especially on their own ground, they are a difficult team to beat. That said, they lost rather heavily at home on Saturday in the League, to Worthing, 0-3, which spoilt a previous run of five consecutive victories.
The League Cup never seems to be a particularly popular competition and is often used by managers to give squad players an opportunity, and why not but Ashford have had quite a record in the competition in recent seasons, actually winning it in 2007, with a 4-1 win over Dover Athletic, and reaching the quarter-finals the next season and the semi-finals last year when they finally bowed out to Harrow Borough.
The match at Fleet kicks off at 7.45 p.m. and there will be extra time and penalties if necessary.
On Wednesday evening, the Under-18’s have an opportunity to cement their place at the top of their division when they entertain Harrow Borough U18 at Short Lane. Their visitors have yet to get off the mark but their results have improved recently. Nevertheless, Ashford will be hoping for a further three points. Kick off is 7.45 p.m.
Just to reiterate there is no match for the Suburban team in midweek, as the originally scheduled game, away to Basingstoke Town has been postponed.
