Visitors to Short Lane tomorrow are AFC Hornchurch. Although, overall our opponents have not enjoyed the best of seasons, they now seem to have found some form and will arrive on the back of two impressive wins, firstly by a solitary goal at Dartford and then by the same score last Saturday at home to Sutton United. They are currently in twelfth place in the table, four points behind Ashford but with two games in hand.
Ashford, unbeaten in league matches since Jamie Lawrence took over, will look to build upon the recent win over Tonbridge Angels and the high scoring draw at Boreham Wood last week. Indeed only two clubs, Dartford and Kingstonian have now scored more goals than Ashford this season.
This is the first meeting between our clubs this season but the stand out match in recent seasons was the opening game of the 2007-2008 season when an incredibly exciting match saw us come back from 1-4 down at half-time only to lose 4-5 in the end. That game saw the only goal scored by Rob Hughes for Ashford, who left us soon afterwards and then suffered the dreadful injuries following an attack whilst on holiday. We understand that a number of people have now been charged in connection with that attack.
The Suburban team are away tomorrow when they travel to meet Basingstoke Town, both matches kicking off at 3.00 p.m.
The Under-18’s enjoyed a useful work out against a strong Staines Town U18 side on Wednesday in a friendly which Ashford won by a solitary goal, scored midway through the second half by Taylor Gough. Just as pleasing was the fact that Ashford finished with four fifteen year olds on the field, a clear demonstration of the talent that continues to come grow as a result of the Club’s successful youth policy
