This match saw the return of Vinnie O’Sullivan from injury with Charlie McCarthy dropping to the bench. Leading scorer Byron Harrison was a late withdrawal with a hamstring pull and he was replaced by Scott Harris but otherwise it was an unchanged team that took the field for this match against form team AFC Hornchurch. Davis Haule, back from suspension was also on the bench as was Nick Salapatas signed on dual registration from North Greenford.
Over the ninety minutes, the general view was that a draw was a fair result, although undoubtedly it was the Tangerines who were more pleased to hear the final whistle, as Hornchurch mounted a strong offensive after going behind in the 57th minute.
The first half produced little of note from either team, the only talking points being a caution for Brett Cooper, when an uncharacteristically wild challenge saw him possibly fortunate to escape more severe punishment, and then right at the conclusion, when Ashford produced a move of great quality which saw skipper Paul Johnson with a clear view on goal but sadly for the home supporters he blazed his effort over the bar.
Ashford came out stronger in the second half and it was not undeserved when they eventually took the lead, when Warren Harris, scoring his third goal in two games, slid the ball home from an acute angle. Ashford might have scored again very soon afterwards but that was about as good as it got for the home side as the visitors grabbed the initiative, winning innumerable corners and looking certain to score on more than on occasion. With just over ten minutes left, they finally did so, from a corner that should have been dealt with better but it was Hornchurch’s Dormer who got the final touch for the equaliser.
Ashford introduced Salapatas near the end and he immediately took the eye with one or two very lively cameos down the left flank.
The Suburban team lost 0-3 at Basingstoke.
