Ashford’s Under-18’s continued the week’s good work last night with a hard fought 4-2 home win over their counterparts from Woking, a result that sees the young Tangerines back to the top of their divisional table. Firstly, great credit should be given to groundsman Andy Frost for getting the pitch into an excellent playing condition, despite all the adverse weather in recent weeks. It did not look though as if it was going to do Ashford much good as, after an even start, Woking gradually took control, scoring twice before the break to take a commanding lead into the second half. Ashford should really have pulled one back just before the half time whistle when Mark Bitmead blazed over with the goal at his mercy. Although play remained relatively even, Ashford did not initially show too many signs of retrieving the situation but they were starting to control much of the possession and the break through came just after the hour mark when Taylor Gough stabbed home from short range. This gave the home side the encouragement they needed and with Woking looking ragged for the first time, it did not take too long before the ever improving Bairoh Conteh swept home the equaliser. On 75 minutes the tables were completely turned when Mark Bitmead made full amends for his earlier miss, rifling home an effort that gave the efficient Woking keeper no chance. The win was then sealed just three minutes from the end when Bitmead was fouled in the area, getting up to crash in an unstoppable penalty kick to give Ashford a win that, just 45 minutes earlier, had looked distinctly unlikely.
