The Suburban League side completed a trio of midweek wins last night to reach the semi-final of the Middlesex Premier Cup by beating a stubborn AFC Hayes side by three goals to two. The result means that Ashford will make the very short journey to either Bedfont Sports or Feltham, who play next week, in the semi-final. The visitors stunned Ashford in the first minute of the match with an opportunist goal but Ben Jones restored parity with a fierce effort soon afterwards. The same player then put Ashford ahead before the break. A further goal from Munir Dar early in the second period seemed to have Ashford coasting to victory but a somewhat soft free kick, vigorously disputed by the Ashford bench, enabled Hayes to pull a goal back which gave the visitors fresh heart and Ashford were on the back foot to some extent after that but held out for the win. Attention turns to the 1st Team on Saturday when they entertain Waltham Abbey in a Ryman Premier League match. Following the midweek win at Sutton, Ashford will approach the match full of confidence but, although the visitors are currently marooned at the foot of the table, they did enough in the match at Waltham Abbey at the start of the season to show that they are not a poor outfit by any means and any complacency on Ashford’s part would be misplaced. The match is being sponsored by supporter Dave Norris, who is also funding free entry for all accompanied children under the age of sixteen. Ashford are extremely grateful to Dave and indeed a number of his fellow supporters who regularly reach into their pockets to help the Club. The Suburban team are also in action on Saturday, travelling down to Kent to play Tonbridge Angels.
