Defensive errors and two quick fire goals in the second half sank Ashford, making this their 7th loss in a row. Player/manager Jamie Lawrence had signed two new players during a busy week, goalkeeper Paul McCarthy from Godalming Town, for his second stint with the club and wide man Devann Yeo, who can name Ipswich Town as one of his former clubs.

The game started with both sides showing a positive attitude despite the blustery wind that swirled around the ground but it became increasingly obvious that the ball should be kept on the ground.

Yeo showed a good early touch but then Daventry defender got in the way of the winger’s left footed goal-bound effort which necessitated a short spell on the side-line with a blood injury to his nose.

The influential Luke Hickie showed great vision when he picked out Oscar Lubwama with a tremendous cross field pass, soon after, and the Ashford right back showed equal skill with a first time pass down to Yeo whose cross was fielded away for a corner.

The conditions caught out Daventry skipper Tom Fountain when he climbed high but headed over from a corner then, at the other end, a free kick given for a foul on Akwasi Edusei by Tom Bates was swung in by Hickie and only deflected out for a corner late as the ball looked to be squeezing in at the near post.

Josh Blake fired a speculative shot high over McCarthy’s bar before a last ditch tackle by Ashford skipper Billy Jeffreys robbed Howard Forinton as the Daventry striker threatened, then the home side had a penalty appeal turned down when the ball was handled in the box following a corner.

The deadlock was broken in the 44th minute when a free kick was given to Ashford a yard outside the Daventry penalty area as Yeo was pulled off the ball. Alain Behi stepped up and forced a good save out of Kemp who tipped the ball on to the cross bar but Isaiah Rankin was on hand to head the ball home.

Ashford’s lead lasted just 50 seconds as, straight from the re-start. Daventry forced a corner which Tom Fountain met to send a looping header over McCarthy for the equaliser.

A clipped shot over McCarthy’s bar by Forinton started the second half  followed by a speculative effort from Berwick that sailed well wide, then Jones Awuah replied for the home side, having two shots blocked before Daventry were gifted the goal that gave them the lead. Oscar Lubwama tried to shepherd a long ball out for a goal kick but Forinton nipped in and nicked the ball then laid it into the path of Bates who side footed the ball past McCarthy’s right hand.
Things went from bad to worse, shortly after, as Daventry benefitted considerably from the ineptitude of one of the assistant referees who failed to flag for an Ashford throw when the ball was clearly over the touchline. Josh O’Grady still had plenty to do though and he surged toward the Ashford goal before hammering the ball past McCarthy at the near post to give his side an unassailable lead.

Daventry concluded their scoring spree in the 80th minute when Bates found the net from 25 yards with a somewhat wind assisted shot that, again, McCarthy could do little about.

Ashford have now played just over half of their league fixtures and will need little reminding that, if they are to resurrect their season, they are going to have to show more fortitude in mixing it with the opposition, resolve in defence and add steel to the passing game that they play starting with Beaconsfield SYCOB on Tuesday.
