Islington Borough 2

Ashford Town (Middlesex) Ladies 4

Greater London Women's League, Division One
Hornsey Road, Islington
9th December 2012

Ashford Town Ladies were finally back in action this week as they made the trip to North London to face Islington Borough, a team that took first day of the season spoils at the RPS.  Town welcomed back Charlotte McGregor who signed from Claygate Royals on Thursday and gave a debut to Marie Thomas.

The opening exchanges showed just how rusty Ashford were and Hannah Smith in goal was forced into two good saves at the feet of Borough forwards.  Despite misplaced passes and giving away possession cheaply it was Ashford who took the lead when Amy Fry stole unmarked in to beat the keeper.  The home side continued to push forward and enjoyed some possession playing some good football in the process but as the half drew to a close Thomas's through ball was dummied by Lucy Easton and Fry again arrived to clip the ball past the onrushing keeper and into the goal to double the lead.

Despite some harsh words of warning at half time Town started the second period similar to the first and some fine defending from Captain Kate Davies and Emily Hogg was required to prevent Borough a way back.  An out of sorts Easton had a few half chances that last season she would have buried before the home side did pull a goal back with a smart counter attack which ended with a shot deflecting off Davies and passed a stranded Smith in goal.  To Ashford's credit it would have been easy to concede an equaliser as their opposition buoyed by their goal started to push forward but instead a deflected goal of their own saw them go 3-1 up.  A few minutes later a Thenet corner wasn't cleared and Kee Kee Kobus stabbed the ball home from close range to make it 4-1.  The spirited home side continued to plug away at Town and scored a deserved consolation but Town had just done enough to get over the line in this 4-2 win to avenge their early season defeat.

Next up for the Ladies is a home fixture in the JGMT competition on 16th December against Luton Town Reserves, 1.30pm kick off.
