Ashford Town (Middlesex) Ladies 2

Greater London Women's League, Division One
Barnet Wood Road, Bromley
30th September 2012

Ashford Town’s Ladies team made the journey to Bromley this week to take on Petts Wood in the league who started their campaign with a convincing 1-6 thrashing of Hampton & Richmond. Manager Kate Cook had to don the boots for the second successive week with Emma Wood, Nicola Archer, Delphine Thenet, Shelby Keppel, Danni Levy and Kirsty Simmonds all unavailable for selection but did welcome back Tash Lodder.

The first half hour belonged to the home side who took full advantage of the slope and pitch conditions and were almost in front within the first five minute but for a superb save from Karrin French-Wollen and a goal-line clearance from Skipper Kate Davies. Woods didn’t have to wait long to make the breakthrough when a freekick from 25 yards evaded everybody to end up in the goal. A second soon followed and Ashford were struggling to cope with Wood’s aggressive approach. The final stages of the half did see Town eventually get their passing game going and carve out two good chances for lone-striker Lucy Easton who saw one effort well saved and another beating the keeper with a lob that landed just wide of the target.

Ashford approached the second half determined not to be bullied out of the contest with Kee Kee Kobus, Hannah Smith and Kate Cook all throwing themselves into some big challenges and Davies commanding her defence who were responding well. Town deservedly pulled a goal back when Kobus headed home from close range but the comeback took a blow just a few minutes later when a Wood’s player crossed from the right only for the ball to sail over French-Wollen for a freak goal. Town thought they had made it 3-2 when Terri Harper went through with the flag staying down and pulled the ball back to Kobus to score only for the flag to then be raised for offside which was given. Ashford continued to attack and with Cook rolling back the years with some delightful passed played in Kobus whose shot was well saved by the keeper. Town did make it 3-2 when Easton raced through and again lobbed the keeper but this time found the target. Davies and Emily Hogg were both on the end of two poor challenges and along with Harper (pulled groin) ended the game carrying injuries and cause for concern with the squad already depleted.

Team: French-Wollen, Fry, Dobell, Davies, Hogg, Harper, Lodder, Cook, Smith, Kobus, Easton
Goals: Kobus & Easton
Player of the Match: Smith
