Although it had not been publicised before the match, Ashford knew beforehand that they would be going into their FA Cup match at Hoddesdon Town on Saturday without three key players in regular keeper Tyler Tobin (unavailable), Samad Kazi (unavailable) and striker Dan Fleming (not quite recovered from a knock the previous week).  With reserve keeper Jake Tayler also unavailable, Ashford managed to sign Loughborough University keeper Jamie Kiff, just in time to register him for the match.

After an early flourish from the home side, the match settled down into a fairly even affair but Ashford gradually seemed to be assuming a degree of control, with Jack Beadle and Joey Robson in particular, combining well down the right flank at times.  Both sides could have taken the lead and Ashford thought they had done just that when Mark Bitmead crashed a free kick against the bar from long range and Bradley Wainwright put the rebound into the net, only to be given offside, a dubious decision, to say the least, sadly one of many throughout the match.  Wainwright was not in an offside position at the moment Bitmead hit the ball.

Ashford did score soon afterwards though on the half-hour mark and this time there could be no argument as Scott Elgar made space for himself and smashed home a shot from some 30 yards giving the home keeper no chance.

There was no addition to the scoreline before halftime but soon after the re-start it all went wrong for the visitors in the space of two minutes.  A header from the seemingly unmarked Tom Wade at the far post enabled the home side to equalise and two minutes later they were awarded a penalty when Kiff was adjudged to have fouled his man, yet another controversial decision that went against the Tangerines.  Hoddesdon's Ed Taylor though made no mistake.

The home side were then largely in control for some 25 minutes restricting Ashford to a few long hopeful efforts.  They did not add to their goal tally though and the game changed again when Connor Scully was given a straight red card for a tackle that could only be described as disgraceful, as he launched himself violently at Wainwright with both feet off the ground.  The referee at least got that one right.

Dominance of possession turned to Ashford as Hoddesdon changed their tactics to defend their lead, and whilst Ashford now looked more threatening, it cannot be denied that Hoddesdon did the job well, assisted by some ridiculous time wasting, totally ignored by the official.  A snap shot from skipper Russell Canderton which just missed, was the closest to a goal.

As so often happens with the visitors having no option other than to throw men forward, Hoddesdon broke away for a third goal close to the end, scored by O’Connor, to seal Ashford's fate.

The match was refereed by yet another very young looking official who seemed out of his depth and the abuse and mickey taking at the end by the Hoddesdon management and players,  was totally unnecessary and quite frankly left a sour taste and certainly let their club down.

Ashford will soon put this behind them though and will look forward to meeting Farnham Town on Tuesday evening, back at Short Lane, for a 7.45 pm kick-off and with a full squad.
