Ashford were thwarted on Tuesday evening at the last minute in trying to get their Middlesex Senior Cup match played at Short Lane against Harrow Borough.  If the writer’s understanding is correct, the referee declared the pitch fit for play upon arrival, whereupon preparations were made to open the turnstiles, cook the burgers, etc., only for him to change his mind and call it off half an hour later.  Opinions are always divided as to whether pitches are suitable for play in such circumstances and given the all persuasive doctrine of health and safety, prevalent with most referees, maybe in future, in similar conditions, we will just call games off early.  Ashford’s view remained that, although hard, the pitch was perfectly flat and that the match could have been played.

It’s gone now though and the match will now be played next Tuesday, kick-off 7.45 p.m.

A similar decision will be required for this evening’s scheduled Under-18 match against Bedfont Sports but one would suspect that this will also fall prey to the weather.  As and when there is news it will be put on here.

If it is off, it means that the next match will be on Saturday when the 1st Team will entertain Chessington & Hook United, kick-off 3.00 p.m.  A contingent from Ashford watched the Chertsey Town v Chessington clash last Saturday, when the Chessington chairman advised us that no less than eight of their regular players were missing, due to a stag weekend.  Nevertheless, they played fairly well until a crucial moment when a critical offside decision went against Chessington, leaving their keeper one on one, only to be sent off as he fouled the attacker.  After that there was only going to be one winner as Chertsey scored from the penalty, despite Chessington’s determined defending and it took two late goals before Chertsey could record a 3-0 victory.
