A satisfying performance at Arlesey Town on Saturday gave the Tangerines a comfortable 3-0 victory, the three points taking Ashford into 4th place in the table.

Following a fairly even start, Ashford started to click and a sustained period of pressure led to Max Webb sending in a low effort from the edge of the penalty area, to score the opening goal of the match on 22 minutes.

Given that Arlesey had recorded a 6-1 victory in their previous league match, they seemed to have little answer to Ashford’s determination on the day and it was little surprise that the lead was doubled on 31 minutes.  Mark Bitmead picked it up in midfield and was allowed time to put a superb through ball directly in front of goal for the unmarked Jack Beadle who made no mistake.

Further chances were missed and the scoreline remained unaltered up to the break.  Ashford expected the home side to react at the beginning of the second half and they did indeed make some inroads but without really looking like pulling the game round.  Indeed it was Ashford who scored the decisive third goal on 56 minutes, when Bitmead took advantage of a long ball from Ashford “man of the match” Scott Weight and finished with aplomb.

Arlesey did provide one scary moment for the visitors’ defence but Bailey Mummery was able to clear from the line and in truth Ashford should really have extended the margin of victory with shots whistling in regularly as the game went on but all failing to find the net.

All in all though, a 3-0 away victory at this level on an opponent’s ground, with no cautions (for either side) is more than enough and Ashford will now look forward to being back at home on Tuesday evening, when Fleet Town will be the visitors to Short Lane (kick-off 7.45 p.m.)
