After a couple of narrow defeats, the Under-18 side got their season up and running on Monday evening with a 5-4 win at CB Hounslow United in the 1st Round of the Middlesex County U18 Cup, known as the Jeff Ritson Cup.

Here is Nick Bailey’s summary of the match:

“Crazy game for the 18s on Monday evening in the Jeff Riston Senior Youth Cup which see host CB Hounslow converting three goals from the penalty spot with stand in keeper Josh Bates in the sticks, the game finished 4-5 to Ashford and sees them progress into the next round.

Ashford started the brighter, plenty of possession and a drive, on another day Ashford should have put the tie to bed during the 1st half but for some rash defending and sloppy decisions they allowed CB back into the game by conceding 2 first half penalties, the half time score 2-3 to Ashford.

The 2nd half started very much the same as the first, plenty of possession and attacking play in which Ashford were awarded with their 4th goal 2-4, but the story was the same as the first half, another penalty allowed CB back into the match 3-4.

Ashford scored their 5th around the 80th minute mark but CB replied, this time not from the spot but from a long range effort which agonisingly rolled under the arms of Bates 5-4.

The match finished 4-5, a great game for the supporter, not so much for the coaching staff, 9 goals, 3 penalties, Ashford will now play away to the winners of Conquest or Hendon in the next round to be played W/C 7th November.”
