Hayes & Yeading UnitedIt took a very late goal but on Monday evening, Ashford’s Under-18 side overcame the challenge of Hayes & Yeading U18, to reach the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Youth Cup.

The match was an absorbing one, played at AFC Hayes, when at times, especially early on, the home side threatened to overrun Ashford and often looked a very decent team indeed, playing with pace and power and passing the ball around in a manner easy on the eye.

Despite all their possession though, Ashford’s determined and well organised defence, well marshalled by Luke Neville, kept them at bay and on the occasions when they did get through, Tyler Tobin in goal looked almost unbeatable on the night.

As the clock ran down, a further half hour’s extra time looked inevitable but then, with just a minute left, Luke Wilson got on the end of a high free kick and acrobatically volleyed it into the net from an acute angle to send Ashford into the next round in which they will be away to either Northwood or Hanworth Villa (not Harefield, as stated yesterday as they were knocked out by Northwood in the Preliminary round).  Northwood and Hanworth Villa meet on Thursday.

Well done to all the squad and especially manager Mark Hughes who is forging a decent side in his first season at the club.  Some of the players must have impressed assistant Suburban team manager Bobby Barnes who was present.  Well done also to referee O’Hene who had an excellent match without cautioning anyone thanks to two well disciplined teams.
