The FA Cup with BudweiserHard fought victories against both Tring Athletic and Dunstable Town have seen Ashford into the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup with Budweiser in which they have been rewarded with a home tie against St. Albans City, who visit Short Lane on Saturday, kick-off 3.00 p.m.

St. Albans are fellow members of the Evostick Southern League but play in the Premier Division, in which they have made a good start, winning five of their eight league matches to date, a record which currently sees them in fifth place in the table.  Danger man is Lewis Toomey who already has eight league goals to his credit this season.  He may well be supported by 40 year old Barry Hayles, who will need no introduction after his 564 appearances in the Football League and Premier League, notably for Fulham.  Jamie Lawrence tried hard to sign him a couple of seasons ago and he actually came to Short Lane but in the end opted to go to Cornwall and join Truro City.

Ashford have met St. Albans twice in the past.  The first occasion was in the 3rd Round of the Bryco (League) Cup back in December 2002, at Short Lane, which saw the visitors leave with a 2-1 victory, our goal coming from Blaise O’Brien.  Much fresher in the memory though will be last season’s FA Trophy match at St. Albans in October 2011 when Ashford surprised their higher league opponents, coming away with a 3-1 victory, courtesy of two goals from Jack Mullan and one from Shane Graham.

Although the visitors will be the clear favourites tomorrow, by virtue of their Step 3 status, Ashford have suffered just one defeat in their last nine competitive matches, and despite Tuesday’s hiccup, will relish the opportunity to test themselves against a good side, and with it, the opportunity to add to the growing FA prize money already earned this season in both the FA Cup and Trophy.

Should the scores be level after ninety minutes, the match will go straight to a replay at St. Albans on Tuesday evening.

On Sunday at Short Lane, the Ladies will be looking to get their season going when they entertain Clapham United Ladies in a Greater London Division One League match.  Kick-off is 2.00 p.m. and your support will be welcomed.  Entry is free.
