The FA TrophyThe Wembley suits can be put away for another season as Ashford were knocked out of the FA Trophy on Tuesday evening by Grays Athletic by two goals to one.

The match was a classic “one of two halves”.  The visitors held sway for much of the first half and it was hard to deny that they deserved their two goal lead at the interval.  That said, they were possibly lucky, for the second match in succession, to keep eleven men on the field, when a wild, high and late, albeit isolated, tackle looked as if had done for Bairoh Conteh midway through the half.  Referee Smith felt that it merited no more than a yellow card and the perpetrator then went on shortly afterwards to score Grays’ second goal.

The second half saw a far more determined display from Ashford and when Kofi Lockhart-Adams glanced in the equaliser just after the hour mark, the comeback looked very much on as Ashford dominated possession for sometime.  Credit must be given though to the Grays defence who held out well, and they were not without chances themselves as Ashford left more and more gaps at the back as the time went on, even keeper Paul McCarthy coming up and staying up in the last few minutes.

Perry Luckins had to be carried from the field after sustaining what looked a nasty injury although possibly not as serious as it first looked but on the plus side sub Joe Bennett was almost a man possessed as he entered the fray, playing in midfield, and must have placed himself in serious contention for Ashford’s next match away to AFC Hayes on Saturday.

It only remains to wish Grays all the best in the next round in which they will be away to Whitehawk FC, who won their replay against Bury Town on Tuesday evening by the only goal of the match.  There will be a full report from Gareth in due course.

Stewart Cook has provided a report from the Ladies’ match on Sunday, which saw a 2-3 defeat at the hands of Petts Wood Ladies.  That will doubtless be on the web site in due course but well done to our scorers Kee-Kee Cobus and Lucy Easton.  The Ladies have a number of injuries at present but will hope to have some of the players back for this Sunday’s match when they will entertain Hackney Ladies at Short Lane, kick-off 2.00 p.m.

Finally just another reminder that the Under-18’s have their important FA Youth Cup match away to Northwood on Thursday evening, kick-off 7.45 p.m., with the winners drawn away to Staines Town in the final qualifying round.
