Staines TownA poor performance overall at Staines last night ensured that Ashford will go yet another year without reaching the holy grail of the 1st Round Proper of the FA Youth Cup, Staines deservedly going through by three goals to one.

The damage was done in the first half as Ashford conceded two poor goals defensively which meant that yet another fight back was required against the men in yellow.  This time it was not to be, even though, to be fair, the team played better in the second half.  Referee Heavey whose fussy approach throughout the evening led to a stop/start match, did not help Ashford’s cause when Eva Batousal found himself clean through on one occasion only to be pulled back for a foul that nobody else was calling for.  There were one or two other worthy efforts but it was not until fifteen minutes from the end that Luke Wilson reduced the arrears with a spectacular solo goal.

That should have been the signal for all out attack from Ashford but some of the passing remained indifferent by normal standards and Staines emphasised their superiority on the night with a third goal near the end.

One shining light on the night was the performance of keeper Tyler Tobin, who certainly could not be faulted for any of the goals.
