Woodford UnitedAshford face a tortuous midweek trip to Woodford United this evening (Tuesday) but anticipate that a full strength squad will be available for the match which kicks off at 7.30 p.m.  For any supporters travelling, the address of the ground is Byfield Road, Woodford Halse, Daventry, Northants, NN11 3QR.

It is a banana skin match for Ashford, with their opponents currently rooted at the foot of the table, having lost every one of their opening eleven league matches.  As we all know only too well, no match at this level can ever be taken for granted and Paul Burgess will ensure that his troops are properly prepared before they take the field, keen to enhance their current unbeaten record which stretches back for six matches in all competitions.

One or two words of “well done” to the current squad:  over the last few matches both Mark Bitmead and Paul McCarthy have now passed the 100 appearance mark for the club, whilst Scott Weight has now made in excess of 100 1st team starts.  On the player front, there was no time beforehand on Saturday to introduce the latest player to wear the tangerine and white, in the shape of keeper Kyle Merson, who has joined us initially on a month’s loan from Conference South side and neighbours, Staines Town, making his debut on Saturday in the one all draw with Aylesbury.  Kyle is a valued member of Staines squad and we are grateful to our neighbours for lending him to us at this time.

We can now report that the Suburban team, making their longest journey of the season on Saturday up to Newport Pagnell Town returned with a 1-0 victory, the vital goal coming from Rob Curtis.  This means that the Suburban team have now gone unbeaten for nine matches, their one and only defeat this season being back on 25 August.  In addition, of the ten league matches played to date, eight have been away, which means a surfeit of midweek home matches later in the season.

Games don’t seem to be all that frequent at the moment, the next one being on Thursday 8 October when the team will travel to Horsham YMCA in the 1st leg of the 2nd Round of the Suburban League Cup.

Sadly not quite such good news to report from the Under-18’s who suffered a heavy defeat on Monday evening at the hands of Staines, who won by five goals to nil.  The damage was largely done in the first half, when, quite frankly it was men against boys, the powerful Staines squad banging in four goals without response.  Ashford steadied things in the second period as Staines eased up but the damage was done.  That said, when Ashford were in possession, they actually played some good football at times but had no cutting edge up front, all too often Eva Batousal being left to forage away on his own with little success.  Manager Mark Hughes and his squad will look forward to a hopefully less daunting match next Monday at home to Bedfont Sports.
