Royston TownHopefully Friday’s thaw, albeit followed by some heavy rain, will enable Ashford to return to action on Saturday and what better game could there be in prospect as we welcome second placed Royston Town from Hertfordshire for what will be the first ever senior meeting between the clubs.

After winning the Spartan South Midlands League in some style last season, Royston have been up amongst the front runners all this season so far, and only relinquished top spot earlier this week when losing narrowly at Rugby by two goals to one.  Ten days earlier they also lost by three goals to one at Slough Town but prior to that, had put in a winning shift that extended to seven matches.

Our only experience of Royston was when they visited us for a Suburban match a few weeks ago, and defeated us by five goals to one.  We were perhaps a little unlucky to lose by such a margin on the day but for a reserve match, some of the football played that afternoon was of a high quality.  Assuming Royston’s 1st Team play in the same manner, we could be in for an excellent match on Saturday.

On Ashford’s part we come into the game on a bit of a high, with three solid wins in a row over Daventry, Wealdstone (albeit on penalties after extra time in the Middlesex Senior Cup) and, last Saturday, Beaconsfield SYCOB.  The postponement of the match at Barton was a blessing as we had various players unavailable due to exams but they should all be back tomorrow.

Recent player news is that we congratulate Bairoh Conteh, Samad Kazi and Alex Duffy, all of whom have now put in over 50 competitive appearances for the club.  Also, we can announce that exciting striker Lee Scott has now joined the club following spells at Bedfont Town, Wingate & Finchley and North Greenford.  He has been a target for Paul Burgess for some time and we are pleased to welcome him to the Club.  Lee is currently recovering from a hamstring injury.

There is no Suburban game on Saturday but the ladies have a decent game in prospect on Sunday when they will be entertaining Luton Town Reserve Ladies in the 2nd Round of the John Greenacre Memorial Trophy.  Luton play at a higher level but the ladies will be buoyed up by their win last Sunday.  Kick-off at Short Lane is 2.00 p.m.

There are very few junior games this Sunday but one to note is that the Sunday U-18 side will be at home to Ashtead on the outfield pitch at Short Lane, kicking off at 12.30.

Last week’s junior results are now available thanks to Kelvin Poulter and here they are:

Looking a little further ahead, just another reminder that our Boxing Day game, at home to Chertsey Town, kicks off at MIDDAY.  Before that, on Thursday 20 December, we have a social evening at the club for all our teams plus supporters, club officials and basically anyone associated with the Club.  Please come down and enjoy the pre-Christmas celebrations.
