AFC WimbledonA stubborn and impressive performance from Ashford in the Surrey Senior Cup was not quite enough in the end on Tuesday evening as they finally succumbed to a goal in extra time from their Football League opponents, who put out a strong team.

As to be expected, the home side had more possession throughout but the Ashford defence once again excelled.  Early nerves could have seen them going behind but Kyle Merson in goal yet again never put a foot wrong, and after that early period, AFC did not have too many clear cut chances.

At the other end, Pietro Palladino came close on occasions and with Ashford never out of the match, possibly everyone present had resigned themselves to penalties when Wimbledon finally made the break through just before the end of the first period of extra time.  The first effort came back off the post but Brendan Kiernan was on hand to apply the killer touch and take the Dons into the 3rd Round of the competition.

Even then Ashford had a golden opportunity right at the death when Samad Kazi found himself through on goal but his hurried effort was easily saved.

It would be wrong to single out any Ashford player as the whole fourteen who saw action did the Club proud.  The important thing now is to maintain the determination on show last night when Ashford go to table toppers Rugby Town on Saturday.

Ashford Secretary Geoff Knock has been admitted to hospital after suffering a stroke on Monday.  Hopefully there will be better news later today as we all wish Geoff a swift and full recovery.
