We might as well all pack up for the winter if we are to come across too many referees like the one due to referee at Fleet on Saturday.  God knows how the home groundsman must have been feeling as he had prepared an excellent surface for the match, with no surface water, only for a late postponement at 2.00 pm to ruin everyone’s afternoon because it was a bit muddy in one of the goalmouths!  Both teams wanted to play but oh no, we couldn’t risk an accident could we!  Best not go on.

Instead the Suburban team had a slightly larger attendance than normal and responded with a 7-0 win over Leverstock Green Res, who seem to be a struggling outfit at the moment.  The scorers were Tom Mooney (2), Mo Zayatte (2), Adam Fearn, Robbie Sitch (penalty), and  Darrell Burgess.  To be fair to the visitors, they never stopped trying to play football but it was virtually one way traffic throughout and Ashford should really have had more goals.  Thank you to league official Chris Pinn who stepped in at the last moment when one of the assistants failed to show.

On to this week then and the prospect of some inevitable postponements one would think.  At this moment though, on Monday morning, everything is on and the Suburban side are quickly back in action this evening when they entertain Southall FC, kick-off 7.45 p.m., in the Quarter Final of the Middlesex Premier Cup, the competition in which we have had some success over the years and were beaten finalists last season.  Southall are back in senior football this season, competing in Division One of the Spartan South Midlands League, in which they sit in a healthy eighth place and will be tough opponents one would imagine.

Whoever wins, will have a home game against either Staines Lammas or Hampton Reserves in the semi-final.

On Tuesday, the 1st Team are scheduled to make the second attempt of the season to play away to Barton Rovers.  They have suffered one or two heavy defeats recently, including a 0-5 reverse at Rugby on Saturday, but they have also beaten both Chertsey and Thatcham by three goals to nil in recent weeks.  The address of the ground for any supporters travelling is Sharpenhoe Road, Barton Le Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4SD and kick-off is 7.45 p.m.

Completing the week are the Under-18’s who, buoyed by some excellent results lately, will be travelling to Northwood on Thursday evening, in search of Ryman Youth League points, kick-off 7.45 pm.

Finally well done to the ladies yesterday, with another good win, this time at home to Northwood Ladies from where they returned with a 3-1 victory, with new signing Georgie Giddings amongst the goals.  The match report is online.
