Southern Combination CupGiven the match against Slough on Saturday, along with the current crop of injuries, Ashford decided not to risk any regular 1st team players and sent out a side consisting of Suburban and Youth team players against Rayners Lane on Tuesday in the Southern Combination Cup.  Rayners Lane may also have been missing a few of their regulars but the personnel from both sides who were on show put on an entertaining match, won by Rayners Lane by the only goal of the match, a simple header from a corner just after the half hour mark in the first half.

In a fairly end to end match both teams enjoyed plenty of possession with Ashford perhaps having more of it in the second half.  Despite the possession though, the visiting keeper was rarely tested, a free kick from Nick Hardy which the keeper saved at the second attempt being about the only time he saw any meaningful action.  Close to the end Tommmy Mooney found himself through on goal but hurried his effort which went wide.

There were positives though:  young Luke Wilson, playing his second match in 24 hours, looked good on the ball whilst Max Herbert, on work experience from Brentford, showed touches of class at times.  In the solidly built Nathan Cooper at centre-half, Ashford may just have found another player with 1st Team potential.

Congratulations to Rayners Lane who will now go on to meet Hanworth Villa in the next round.

Don’t forget that, this evening, Ashford ladies will be on show at Short Lane, entertaining Colne Valley Ladies in a league match, kick-off 7.45 p.m.

There were some good results for the various junior teams on Sunday, all remaining unbeaten
