NorthwoodAshford welcomed back Jacob Mingle after a break of seven years and he certainly made his mark when he came on from the bench with twenty minutes left.  Overall though, Saturday’s result was disappointing for the Tangerines who had every bit as much of the ball as promotion chasing Slough, but lacked penetration throughout.  The same accusation could also be levelled at Slough but having scored the one goal, they did not have to be further penetrative.

The solitary goal arrived just before half-time, a crisp volley from Slough’s Ollie Burgess, who seems to enjoy scoring against Ashford.  It gave Paul McCarthy no chance.

The match might have been different if an excellent chance had not been wasted, literally in the opening seconds but even though Ashford were aggrieved by the referee’s decision to allow less than three minutes stoppage time at the end despite substitutions, injuries and some blatant time wasting, it was clutching at straws really as Ashford failed to score in a league match for only the second time this season. There will be a full report from Sam Petherick in due course.

On to this week’s midweek games and there is another full complement.

This evening (Monday) the Suburban side welcome Horsham YMCA to Short Lane in another Suburban Shield match, kick-off 7.45 p.m.  The team enjoyed a more resounding win on Saturday at Chichester, than the 1-0 scoreline suggests, with the vital goal coming from Luke Wilson and with Horsham also doing well in this competition, it could be an excellent match.

On Tuesday evening Ashford will entertain Northwood in the semi-final of the Middlesex Senior Cup, with the winners to meet either Hayes & Yeading or Staines in the Final on Easter Monday.  A win would revitalise the season and would give the Tangerines some real impetus as they go into the final round of matches and it would be good to see as many supporters present as possible.

The Under-18’s complete the week’s fixtures with a visit to Northwood on Thursday evening in a Ryman Youth League match.

Sadly the ladies had to cancel their match yesterday due to a spate of injuries, following their midweek tryst against Colne Valley Ladies
