Aylesbury United

Still no points but Ashford came mighty close on Saturday losing unluckily to Aylesbury United.  A goal either side of half-time from the visitors sealed their victory but Ashford continue to show superb team spirit and can fairly claim to have dominated possession more and more as the match wore on.

Elliott Jones got one back close to the hour mark and it seemed that an equaliser just had to come with chance after chance being squandered.  Adam Turner might have done better with a difficult header whilst Jack Beadle squandered the easiest chance of all, not hitting his effort hard enough towards an empty net, which allowed the ball to be cleared as it was halfway across the line.  Javan Alexander then hit the post with a superb effort and Joe Bennett, back in tangerine colours, hit the rebound wide.

It was not to be though and another three points went down the drain along with an unsavoury end when manager Ben Murray was removed from the dugout in frustration at some of the decisions which seemed inconsistent all afternoon.  As always there were some positives:  Tyler Tobin in goal was excellent and Joe Bennett was impressive on his return to the club.  Sub Javan Alexander certainly showed up well when he came on, whilst skipper Russell Canderton looked to be getting back to his best, especially against a difficult opposition striker who did not make life easy.

We make the short trip to AFC Hayes next Saturday where certain of their players have just received savage suspensions for apparently betting upon the outcome of matches within the League.  There has been no suggestion of match fixing but it needs to be a warning to all players that you cannot bet upon the outcome of any match in a competition in which you are, or have been, a participant this season.
