MarlowRecent matches had given Ashford some hope that they were perhaps turning the corner but an abject defeat at the hands of Marlow on Boxing Day has left everyone wondering where we go from here.  The answer, of course, will be the Combined Counties League (or the Hellenic or the Spartan S. Midlands) unless things can be drastically turned round.

Marlow dominated the proceedings for much of the first half, despite the return of Joe Bennett who has at least given Ashford a genuine scoring threat up front.  Indeed Bennett had the ball in the net twice in the first half but both were ruled offside and it was the visitors who deservedly went in two up at the break.  When the third goal went in after the resumption and the match was effectively lost, Ashford finally started to play a bit and for a while it was hard to accept that the club was marooned at the foot of the table when they played as they did.  Bennett missed a good opportunity as did Perry Luckins and substitute Javan Alexander, who certainly gave everything he had and must be in line for a starting place.  When it’s not your day though (or your season in this case) nothing goes for you and a realistic shout when Alexander seemed to be tripped in the area was turned down only for Marlow to go straight down the field and notch a freak fourth goal as a clearance from Jack Mullan rebounded off a team mate to present the visitors with an open goal.

On Saturday Ashford make the long trip to St. Ives, the address of the ground being Westwood Road, St. Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 6DT
