The Football Association have awarded club stalwarts Bob Parker and Alan Constable the 50 Year Medal for long service within the game. Both Bob and Alan will be presented with their medals on the pitch prior to the Middlesex Senior Cup match with Harefield United next Tuesday (11th February).

Bob has been continuously active within football since playing for Staines Youth Club FC in the early 1960s, becoming the manager at the beginning of the 1963-64 season. Staines Youth Club merged with Ashford Town in 1966, allowing Ashford to resurrect their Reserve Team, although Bob became First Team Manager at that time and often also acted as Secretary on a temporary basis.  In those days, the club had to provide a Linesman at each match and Bob won the Surrey Intermediate League (Western)’s Linesman of the Year Award in 1975-76.

Alan, meanwhile, had started playing football at school and moved into open-age Sunday football, playing in a local league with a now-defunct club called Thameside FC, for whom he continued to play even after beginning to play Saturday football for Ashford Town, as they were then known.

Having begun training with Ashford as a young player midway through the 1964-65 season, Alan made his debut against Waxlow on 2nd April 1965, which ended in a 0-4 home defeat! Undeterred, Alan stayed with the club and played for the Ash Trees from 1965-84, amassing over 650 appearances for the club. He was, until a few years ago, the holder of the club record for the most matches played.

Of course, for most people connected with the club, Bob and Alan are very much a “double act” and had it not been for their hard work – both individually and as a team – the club as we know it would almost certainly not exist. In 1982, at the same time as the club’s election into the Surrey Premier League, Bob became Chairman and Alan the Secretary. They held these roles until 2010 and led the club from “park football” to Step 3 of the National League System. During this period, the club secured and developed its current home ground, secured promotion into Senior Football, won five Combined Counties League championships in six seasons and then earned further promotions to reach the Isthmian League Premier Division.  The club has also won the Isthmian League Cup, Surrey Senior Cup and reached the Fourth Qualifying Round of The FA Cup twice.

Since 2010, both Bob and Alan have remained active within the club, albeit in different roles. Bob is now the President and Alan the Vice-Chairman. Everyone connected with Ashford Town (Middlesex) FC owes Bob and Alan a debt of gratitude and it would be wonderful to see as many people as possible at next week’s match so that we can celebrate their continued contribution to our club.  Their medals will be presented by Peter Clayton, Chief Executive of the Middlesex County FA, in his capacity as the County’s representative on The FA Council.

Congratulations, Bob and Alan – and thank you!
