The Egham report upon the latest defeat summed it up perfectly well:  Ashford played with spirit but no cutting edge.  Add to that a propensity to let in late goals and we were left with a 0-4 defeat that sounded far more one sided than it actually was.  With recently signed striker James Awosifan still absent, presumably through injury, Ashford rarely looked like making anything from the amounts of possession they enjoyed at times against a decent home side, who scored one before the break and then doubled the lead with a penalty in the second period that looked harsh to say the least.  Two further late goals emphasised the victory for the Sarnies.

The big talking point of the match though was the referee’s decision to continue playing in the second half when the lights went out, or a goodly number of them.  The problem was that one end was left dark whilst the other was near normal and on a filthy night anyway, Ashford were forced to defend in a gloom that in no way reached the levels of illumination required for senior football.  It must be stressed that no blame attaches to Egham as lights can fail anywhere and it’s one of those things but the decision to play on though was incredible and potentially a safety hazard.  Contrary to suggestions, in no way was it agreed by Ashford’s management, who at one point were thinking of taking the team off the field.  Common sense prevailed as far as that was concerned but it was yet another knock back in this awful season.  We can do no more than report the matter to the authorities, which has been done.

Let it be stressed that the present squad continue to play with enthusiasm and there are indeed some good players amongst them but no-one seems able to score a goal and until that can be overcome, sadly, things are unlikely to change.

The next match is away to Northwood on Saturday although it may be doubtful given the weather forecast.
