Ashford will entertain champions elect, Daventry Town on Tuesday evening, when the visitors will arrive in 3rd position in the table, eight points behind leaders Rugby Town but with no less than five matches in hand.  It will though be their fourth match in eight days as they strive to overcome their fixture backlog following the difficult winter and an excellent FA Cup run which took them to the 1st Round Proper.  On Saturday a last gasp goal enabled them to draw at home to Slough whilst last Thursday they had a blip, losing 0-3 to Kettering Town.  Overall though, they have lost very few.

We played at Daventry in the very first match of the season and in some ways it laid the foundations for the unexpectedly  poor time that we have endured until the last few weeks.  We found ourselves two down but fought back to level the scores, following which Daventry had a player sent off.  At that point, with little more than fifteen minutes left, it looked as if anyone was going to win it would be us.  Almost at once though, Paul McCarthy let a corner slip through his fingers, resulting in a goal for Daventry and from that point it was if they had the extra man, as they rubbed it in with two more goals in stoppage time to see us on the wrong end of a 2-5 defeat, when just a little earlier we had entertained hopes of winning the match.

Our squad is very different now to the one that started at Daventry and Ashford will come into the match on the back of five matches unbeaten, including last week’s honourable draw against Rugby Town.  After losing so many in a row, these recent games have been a breath of fresh air and whilst no-one would claim that the present squad are world beaters, no-one could beat them for effort and indeed unity.  This evening’s match is possibly one where any points gained will be a bonus but supporters can rest assured that the players will give 100% as we continue our efforts to stave off relegation, an unlikely prospect a few weeks ago.

Our relegation rivals and, realistically the only two clubs we need to worry about are also both in action on Tuesday evening.  Chertsey will be travelling up to Royston whilst North Greenford United make the shorter journey to AFC Hayes.

Ben Murray was delighted with the support the team had at Potters Bar on Saturday, and indeed over the last few games, and through the web site he would like to thank all those who have been here for the team.  The Club echoes those sentiments, as yet again last Tuesday our supporters clapped both sides off at the final whistle, a feature that has occurred regularly this season.  Even the ref got a clap, although that does not happen quite as frequently!

There is some off field news in that we strengthened the club committee with the appointment of four new people last Thursday.  We now have Graham and Sue Cooley on board, along with builder Gary Tomasy and electrician Scott Cartwright, both associated with the Sunday side, but both keen to have a greater involvement with the Club.  Nick Bailey, who many of you will know, will also become part of the set-up, no matter what League we are in, as we start to prepare for next season.

It cannot be denied that the ground is looking a trifle scruffy at the moment with the recent storms having damaged several fences and posts.  We are seeking replacements from several sources but fence panels are actually in short supply at the moment with demand outstripping availability.  If anyone can help, especially if they are able to donate some to us, please get in touch.

As well as Tuesday’s match our other teams are also in action this week, namely the Suburban side who will be entertaining North Greenford United Res this evening (Monday 17th) in a league match, whilst on Wednesday the Under-18’s will be down the road at Bedfont Sports for a Ryman Youth League match.  Both matches kick off at 7.45 p.m.
