There may not be any league football at the moment but there is plenty going on at Short Lane throughout the summer.

There are two “big” events coming up in early June.  The first is on Sunday 1 June when we are delighted to welcome back the Sri Lankan Football Association for their annual Sports Fiesta.  This time, as well as football and junior football, there will also be netball and soft ball cricket going on and it will be a bumper day with a large crown present.  Anyone wanting more details can view the Sri Lanka web site at  There is an early start to the day at 9.00 a.m. and it is expected that His Excellency Dr. Chris Nonis, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in England will be present, as he was last year, arriving around 2.00 p.m.

This was the report from last year’s tournament, won by Gunasinghapuara FC:

Sunday 19th May 2013 was a beautiful sunny day. Our annual football tournament was held at Ashford Town (Middlesex) Football Club Robert Parker Stadium. The opening ceremony started with the hoisting of the Sri Lankan National flag by his Excellency Dr. Chris Nonis, the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in the UK. This was followed by the hoisting of the United Kingdom flag by Mr. Ben Murray the senior coach for Ashford Town (Middlesex) Football Club. And the SLFO UK flag by the president Mr. Jiva de Lambert. Mr. H.M.K Herath Cultural Affairs minister of the Sri Lankan High Commission, Mr. Alan Vice Chairman Ashford Town Football Club also participated.

The tournament was conducted by The Ashford Town (Middlesex) Football Club with their members’ fullest co-operation. Without the help of Mr. Tyrone Fernando (Sri Lanka), one of the junior football coaches, this event wouldn’t have been a success. We appreciate all their valuable assistance.

We very much look forward to their return this year.

Closer to home, over the weekend of June 14/15, Ashford have their own annual Junior Football Tournament,  involving every age group through form Under-8’s to Under-17’s.  There is also an Under-12 girls’ tournament.

The tournament is being organised by Conor Moody and Louise Munns and there are still a few vacancies for teams to come in at some of the age groups.  Entry fee is £30.00 per team (£50.00 if 2 or more teams are entered from the same club at the same age group).  Anyone interested can contact either Conor (This email address is being protected from spambots. On the 1st Team front, the Club is indebted to JAS Forwarding, situated just round the corner form the ground, who will be our shirt sponsors next season.  JAS have donated a four figure sum towards the purchase of new kit for next season.  Special thanks go to Mr. Noel Broadbent, the Managing Director of JAS, and we hope to welcome some of the staff at JAS to the Club as new members.

We are also extremely grateful to Alan King, Jnr, Sales Manager at Hitchcock & King who has agreed to donate fencing and posts to the club, to go with the paint that they have already been kind enough to donate.  Chris Canderton has played the major part in enlisting this very generous donation.  Our new maintenance team, headed by Simon Munns and assisted by Chris Canderton, Dan Butler and Gary Tomany will be getting down to business as soon as they can.  Gary has also volunteered to re-pain the home dressing room in time for the new season and there is suddenly a great deal of positivity at the Club after the disasters of the last campaign.

A further friendly can also be announced, as we will be travelling to meet Hellenic League side Ascot United on Saturday 26 July, at their picturesque ground, situated under the shadow of the race course.
