If proof were needed of the standard of Under-18 football in the Ryman Youth League, it was on show last night at Ashford.  The new Tangerines were excellent at times but visitors Wingate & Finchley, also playing some lovely football at pace, were that little bit better in the first half, although there were no goals at the break.

A free kick early in the second half gave the visitors the breakthrough but Ashford fought back and came so so close to equalising shortly afterwards.  Everyone at the other end thought it had gone in but somehow it was cleared.  Ashford seemed to grow into the match after that and probably deserved to share the points by the end of the game.

The solitary goal meant that all three points went to Wingate but football was the winner with both sides deserving of the applause at the end.

The Under-18’s have an early rest next week but will entertain Hayes & Yeading U18 in a fortnight’s time on Wednesday 17 September, kick-off 7.45 p.m.
