Some ridiculously weak refereeing coupled with some X-rated challenges from the hosts, especially in the first half rather soured this game at times.  However, Ashford came back from a goal down to beat Burnham in the 1st Round of the Red Insure League Cup by two goals to one.  Ashford gave a full league debut to Chris Robinson at right back, with Jim Mann again partnering Russell Canderton at the back and Harry Knock pushed into midfield.  Both Jack Mullan and Mark Bitmead were on the subs’ bench.

Ashford started well and probably had the upper hand for the opening twenty minutes but didn’t create too many clear chances. Burnham though gradually wrestled the initiative away from the visitors, culminating in a goal seven minutes before half-time when a fiercely struck shot from distance eluded Paul McCarthy.

The second half was again a full bloodied encounter and it was ironic that the only caution of the night was for a handling offence.  Both teams had opportunities to change the scoreline but with Burnham having used all their substitutions possibly too early, Ashford finally equalised on 76 minutes when the lively Samad Kazi got on the end of a cross to stab the ball home.

As time went on, it seemed that a draw after 90 minutes was inevitable but right at the death, up popped Kofi Lockhart-Adams with the winner.  Ashford saw the five minutes of additional time through safely and will await the draw for the second round, to be played w/c 19 November.
