Preview: Chipstead v Ashford, Sat 18 Aug 18

Published by Springett on

Ashford make the trip to Chipstead this afternoon. Our Surrey rivals used to be very regular opponents in the 90’s but this will be the first league encounter since the year 2000, although there have been a sprinkling of cup and friendly matches since then.

Two matches remain foremost in the writer’s mind, one being the match on 5 November 1983, when Bobby Burgess scored all four of our goals in a 4-2 win at Chipstead and the other, on 1 February 1991, when the fog descended and gradually got worse. Inevitably with Chipstead leading 1-0, they though the game should continue whilst we were imploring the referee to abandon it. With just seven minutes left on the clock, he duly obliged, so we all returned later that season, only to lose the second “leg” by three goals to nil!

Back to modern times and knowing how difficult they have generally been to beat at home, our opponents secured an impressive win at Chalfont St. Peter last Saturday by 2 goals to nil, both coming in the first half. Dan Fleming, incidentally, was on the bench for Chalfont, having left Hanwell Town.

Kick-off today is 3.00 p.m. and admission is £10 (£7 concessions). The address of the ground is: Chipstead FC, High Road, Chipstead, CR5 3SF.

If you can’t make it to Chipstead, Southall have an attractive match in the CCL at our ground, where they will entertain league leaders Abby Rangers, kick-off 3.00 p.m.
