Preview: Cray Valley (PM) v Ashford, Sun 26 Aug 18, Emirates FA Cup – Preliminary Round

Published by Springett on

Ashford have a short breather before taking on Cray Valley (PM) FC in the Preliminary Round of the Emirates FA Cup on Sunday afternoon. It is on Sunday as Cray ground share with Greenwich Borough, who play at Step 4, and thus have precedence, over their hosts who play at Step 5, in the Southern Counties East (ex Kent League).

Taken from our opponents’ informative web site, the address of the ground is the Badgers Sports ground, Middle Park Avenue, Eltham, SE9 5HT,located just off the “Yorkshire Grey” roundabout on Westhorne Avenue, part of the busy London South Circular Road. Just a few minutes from the A2, the roundabout is named as a fond remembrance by locals of the Yorkshire Grey pub which stood nearby for many years before being turned into a McDonalds Restaurant.

There is a large, free car park on site. From our area, there are two choices really, either come round the South Circular Road or use the M25 and come off at Junction 3 and follow the A20 and then the A208. It is nearly 60 miles round the M25 but may still be a quicker route.

Cray currently sit in 5th place in their table and are the League’s top scorers with 14 goals in their opening four matches. After just two games, we are in 6th place in our division with a win and a draw from those two matches. There will be no extra time if the result is a draw with any replay scheduled for Tuesday 4 September back at Short Lane, kick-off 7.45 p.m.

The League has ruled that our original Bank Holiday Monday match, away to Hanwell Town, now has to be played this coming Tuesday evening, just 48 hours after the cup game. We have to get on with it although it does mean that our opponents will have had an extra day’s rest. We were hoping to meet up again with ex-Ashford favourite Dan Fleming but we now understand that he has moved on again, this time to Chalfont St. Peter. Kick-off at Hanwell will be 7.45 p.m.

The next home match is next Saturday when Cheshunt will be the visitors. We have not played them since the year 2002! At the moment we do not have either a Match Day sponsor nor a Match Ball sponsor for next week (£250 or £75). Please come forward if you can help (07956 930719) and we will be delighted to hear from you.
