Abbey Rangers 0 – 2 Ashford

Tuesday 4th August 2020 | Preseason Friendly

Two second half goals made it 2 out of 2 as Tuffs Tangerines continue their season preparations.

A very competitive “friendly” on Tuesday evening saw Ashford wining 2-0 at Abbey Rangers, which was the first time ever that Ashford have managed to get the better of their opponents in their regular pre-season matches over 90 minutes.

The first half was full of fiercely contended football from both sides with time on the ball at a premium.  Ashford went close a few times but so did their opponents and the 0-0 scoreline was about right at that stage.

The second half saw Ashford playing more cohesively, gradually gaining a smidgeon of ascendency and they were rewarded with the opening goal on 62 minutes when Kane Fitzgerald found space to lob the ball carefully over the home keeper.

Just two minutes later Ashford doubled their lead thanks to Dale Burnham who headed home Aaron Petch’s excellent free kick to make it 2-0, for his second goal in as many matches.

Abbey certainly had their moments and might well have scored but for good defending, an excellent keeper, plus poor finishing meaning they were unable to dent Ashford’s rearguard. Ashford themselves might have scored again, especially from one or two of Petch’s excellent crosses.

There is little doubt that Ashford’s new look team look a powerful and skilful squad that augurs well for the season ahead.
