Ashford 1 – 2 Southall

Saturday 15 August 2020 | Preseason Friendly

Southall ran out winners in a much lower key repeat of last seasons Lord of Ashford in Middlesex Bowl.

Behind closed doors are just not the same at the moment. And is was very evident for this game as it should have been the repeat of last season preseason Lord of Ashford in Middlesex Bowl. Without the fans it didn’t have that same feel, although Southall were extremely fired up for this game against their groundsharing landlords.

With a few players unavailable, manager Luke Tuffs took the opportunity to give others a good opportunity to stake their claim to a squad place. It was also good to see the return of Samad Kazi for preseason.

Southall burst out of the starting blocks and had a lot of the initial overall attacking play. Contesting every ball and really pushing Ashford hard in all quarters. Very much the same from last season, and what should have been expected. They have some very good players and team energy. It only took them 5 minutes to take the lead, with a really smart finish on the turn just on the edge of the Ashford box. Nestling down low inside the lefthand post. This certainly gave them even more of a boost.

Southall continued to push Ashford and possibly had more of the attacking play in the opening half hour. a few times Ashford’s keeper Jake was forced in to good saves to keep the score to just 1. A fantastic tip over from a free-kick on 30 minutes being a notable stop.

The Tangerines weather the Southall energy and started to look to get closer to them and push forward more when possible. Going in to the half-time break still just the one goal down.

A bit of a half-time wake up call from Luke Tuffs seemed to spur the Tangerines on fro the second half. Looking more with it, and starting to get their game together. Nine minutes in to the restart and AShford were level through a Southall own goal. Just nodded om with a back header after some great work on the left got a great cross to the far post. However, this was short lived as Southall smashed their way back in to the lead on 58 minutes after a neat move driving at the Ashford defence.

The Tangerines did get the ball in the back of the net on 74 minutes, but it was ruled out for offside. A great header on the end of a delightfully whipped in free-kick from Aaron Petch. Slight question as to whether the goalscorer was actually offside or not, or if it was another static player. There were not too many protests though. The reaminder of the game played out with both sides still pressing and showing good energy. Unfortunately Ashford just couldnt find another opportunity to break through. Another good run out for the team though as they continue their rebuilding.

Many thanks to Southall for a really well contested preseason game. They will no doubt have a good season on the basis of that performance.
